How I won £10,000

Back at the beginning of September last year I was informed I was the winner of the #‎WinYourFees‬ creative competition that Currys and PC World were running on snapchat.

I’d won: £10000

and a technology bundle consisting of:
A Microsoft Surface 3 (128GB), plus a Surface Keyboard (Black), McAfee LiveSafe 2015 and Microsoft Office 365 Home
A set of Sennheiser Momentum On Ear Headphones
A Russell Hobbs Iron
A Hoover Spritz Cylinder Bagless Cleaner
A Krups Nespresso Coffee Machine Black
A Breville Impressions Toaster Black
A Breville Impressions Kettle Black
AWaring Pro Sandwich Maker
to help kit out my student flat.

All in the all the prize total was worth £11,200

The competition ran for a month from the beginning of August till early September and each week a different challenge was set that UK students could enter, and the overall best entry from all of the 4 challenges would win the prize.

The challenges consisted of:
Week 1: “Cook us something nice”
Week 2: “Make something creative”
Week 3: “Show us your party trick”
Week 4: “Recreate your favourite movie scene”

I entered in the 2nd and 4th week of the competition.  For the second week I created a camera piñata (as I want to be a Film Director and I thought they’d pick an entry related to a career goal)  and also a collage to explain why I should win. My friend filmed me destroying the piñata until all the sweets fell out, it was quite funny to watch. My winning entry was from the 4th week, where I recreated the scene from Harry Potter where Harry gets told he’s a wizard using puppets that I’d made and I also narrated it.

I chose to recreate this particular movie scene as Harry Potter is the series that inspired me to want to become a writer/director and also because it’s generally awesome.

I honestly wasn’t expecting to win the competition, I’m not artistic at all and I honestly thought there’d definitely be better entries than mine. However, I thought I’d give it a shot anyway – because you’ve got to be in it to win it, right? And what do you know I actually won!!! This was my far my biggest and best prize.

It took me a long while to actually believe that I’d won, I don’t think it was until I received the first part of the prize, when I really started to believe it. Winning the money was amazing and has meant I have now been able to pay off my first year of fees upfront, which is super helpful as going to university is really expensive nowadays and all of the debt was looming over me. So it’s great to now have at least part of it covered. The technology bundle has also come in really handy, the tablet is super light and great for taking my lecture notes, and I’ve decided to save the rest of the appliances for next year, as they’re expensive and I didn’t want them to get destroyed in halls.

Also, it was amazing to win this particular competition as well, because the only reason I started entering competitions again back at the beginning of August last year was to try and win things to help with uni in the first place, so it was amazing to win a prize that is such a massive help!
